Christmas gratitude from one of my students

Writer's picture: Cate TaylorCate Taylor

One of my young tutees who comes for English support has written this delightful letter to Santa. It filled me with Christmas cheer and I hope it will you too.

He is delighted that I am publishing his work here and is now considering himself a published author! This from a child who by his own admission, when he first started with me, was very insecure about his writing and embarrassed by his spelling. Now he knows his spelling is something that he has to continually work on, but he is motivated to do so and can celebrate the writing that he produces, spelling mistakes notwithstanding.

Many children find it difficult to write accurately, with regard to both punctation and spelling, at the same time as coming up with creative ideas; this is due simply to the constraints of working memory. A good strategy is to train them to proofread their work afterwards to check for punctuation and spelling errors, perhaps with the support of a spelling list.

So, from us both, we wish you a very Happy Christmas!
